Opal Fruits was a much loved brand name in the UK. They were the square chewy sweets now known as Starburst. Kids may remember the catch-phrase “Opal Fruits, made to make your mouth water”, an advertising slogan which was used from the 70’s onward.
Why the name change? It seems they were only known as Opal Fruits in the UK, so the corporate bosses at Mars Confectionery took the decision to rename them back in 1997. At the time, they were quoted as saying, “It would make little sense to increase our marketing investment behind a brand name with limited geographical distribution in a global marketplace.”
Reading about the history of Opal Fruits, they were invented by Mars in 1960, with four flavours, strawberry, lemon, orange, and lime. There was a competition to name the new sweets and the winner received a prize of £5.00
